Bulk Barn is a Canadian bulk foods store founded in September 1982 by Carl Ofelid. The store sells common to somewhat specialty foods (like vegan and non GMO ones). Though the store can't be considered zero waste due to its heavy use of plastic in both prepackaged and bulk items, it encourages customers to use its Reusable Container Program to reduce waste.

A former employee shares his experience on indeed.com, "Working at Bulk Barn is the worst. I dread going in because there is always drama. They make fun of you when you aren't working in front of customers. They make fun of you behind your back and then are super nice to your face. Head office won't approve a schedule so you don't know what you are working until the day before the following week. Paystubs are only available online so you have no idea if you are being paid correctly each week. Head office won't help you with anything if you call them, they just don't care. They don't respond to letters sent to them with store issues they just forward it to the store where nothing happens. They post jobs with local job search companies and never hire anyone for those positions then complain when people don't want to work more than 1 or 2 days a week. Everyone makes about the same wage but aren't treated the same. Unless you want to goof off in the backroom making Tik Tok Videos and posting on the internet."

"I worked here for 2 and a half years. 2 I was a supervisor, and for 6 months I was the manager. The contract owner made all of our lives miserable with ridiculous demands that was impossible to keep up with no matter how good a worker and team you had on. I would never work for that person or store again. Head office also made our jobs very difficult."

"The management at my location has to be the worst I’ve ever had to work with. Never did their own job and depended on the supervisor to do everything for them without a single thank you. Was incredibly passive aggressive to staff and made us all feel horrible almost every shift. I could go on and on but to summarize, they were rude, didn’t follow health and safety regulations, caused drama between staff, would constantly change rules to benefit themselves, never completed paperwork and pay properly and honestly just made the time I spent there a nightmare. All of this and more were reported to higher ups and nothing was done. Majority of the store quit after I did and I don’t blame any of them. No benefits, horrible management and overall not worth anyone’s time or mental stability."

"This company is absolutely terrible. The location I worked for in St.catharines went from the best job I've ever had to the worst job I had ever imagined by simply switching the store manager. Now we are forced to put out moldy gross product, things are hidden to cover herself so she doesn't get in troubke. Favouritism is huge here be careful of all the backstabbers too. Overworked every single person, forced injured employees to continue working and further injure themselves, fakes health and safety check and the list goes on for miles The company KNOWINGLY are continuing to allow abuse , harassment, and bullying by this manager and allowed 9 employees to quit because of this person instead. Good luck to anyone in the future. Definitely work here if you love to take abuse and to be trained incorrectly then written up for doing things that way, and for being blamed to cover the company's butt. I loved my coworkers for sure they were awesome, this company is absolutely disgusting and would rather ruin countless people's work ethic and lives to keep this person. Just wow"

"I worked at a store owned by Corporate Bulk Barn. It was extremely stressful to work in the toxic workplace environment and super disorganized management. You have no idea what you are walking into when you show up for your shift. Staff is always short, company has ZERO motivation to actually communicate with employees working in the store. Best part of working here is the co workers. The higher ups don't give a care in the world about the little people. They don't listen to us or even care what we say."

"I worked at the store owned by cooperate Bulk barn's and it was extremely stressful work in the intoxicated workplace environment and super disorganized management. You always get to be mentioned with what was not been done well instead of what was done well. Staff is always short, company has zero motivation to communicate with employees working in the store. Voices of employees in the store are never to be heard, and this cycle of bad situations keeps happening and happening again. Remaining staff is always asked for so much and they always get blamed and pointed as black sheep whenever things are not get done as much as management wanted them to do just because there WAS NEVER ENOUGH STAFF to get all those done. Do never waste your time applying for working in this company unless you have zero self-respect. Find somewhere else treats you better."

"I was a Supervisor, but the Supervision was applied to a handful of teenager cashiers. I would have cashiers duties too. My duties were mostly to balance the tills 3 times a day, opening and closing the store, be a book keeper, banking services, washing the scoops, making sure that before closing time the entire store would be washed and cleaned. the store was open from 9am to 9pm, 7 days a week no regards for holidays, such as Easter Day or other Statutory holiday. Management was really a slave driving conglomerate, the store is a sweat shop, their pay is minimum pay but they want workers to slave, not a moment of relaxation. I never had a real lunch break. They have the highest turnover of people, because they are not happy. That's the reason I left."

Upper Management have favorites never promote from within. Run as fast as you can. Don't waste paper applying to work for a company owned BulkBarn."

I started and the supervisor told me I was heading in the right direction, then on my very last day before my probation was up they let me go. "Worked here for 6 years - NEVER got a raise even though they kept demanding more duties from me in the same time span. Head Office could NOT care less about the employees - all they care about is money. No matter how good of a worker you are (and the guy who owned the franchise I worked at said I was one of his best employee in a long time) they assume you don't know anything, are worthless, speak in a demeaning tone to you, and over-all treat you like you don't know anything. They keep adding more and more products THAT ALL LOOK THE SAME and then penalize cashiers when they can't tell 20 different white powders apart! No matter how diligently the employees clean - and the cleaning is back-breaking because you have to hunch over and sweep under the bins for all five aisles, meaning you are walking and reaching while you are bent over which is incredibly painful - the place is always dirty and usually have mice problems. Employees are expected to routinely lift over 50LBS BY THEMSELVES! The re-usable container program made our lives SO MUCH more difficult because the customers fight with you about the cleanliness of their containers - "Why can't my container have rust/dust/actual dirt in them?!?!" - and then you get yelled at, so you just give up and allow people to use dirty containers to get their food because min. wage is not enough compensation to get yelled at over dirty containers ALL DAY LONG. Head Office introduces new products and then immediately discontinues them, which means if your store is a franchise, your boss is FORCED to buy this new product and then FORCED25% off for employeesliterally everything else"

"the bulkbarn was one of my worst jobs I've had in life. The manager was very rude and inconsiderate. When I first started it was franchised and half way through they went corporate. They changed almost the whole staff by pushing them out the door. They would expect you to get on you hands and knees cleaning the floors and get up and serve customers."

"First off they all should be shut down due to a massive company wide infestation of insects, to which the owner at my location held no accountability for and chose not to do anything about. The owner at my location had little to no involvement at his store and was awful at judging and hiring staff, to this date I have never worked in a more incompetent workplace in my life. The sad thing is, this is literally the easiest job I've ever done in my life and still the people who work there are incapable of performing simple tasks related to proper food handling and sanitation."

"Do you want a job that drains the life out of you in a way you didn’t think retail could do? Do you want to work for a company that doesn’t care about you at all? Do you want to be stuck as a cashier and have no ability to move up since they only hire from the outside? Do you want to earn minimum wage but work as if you’re salaried? Then Bulk Barn is the job for you! In all seriousness, I worked at Bulk Barn for over two years. At first it wasn’t bad, I enjoyed my store and my management within the store. My hours were consistent, I got the days off I asked for, I knew exactly what was expected of me. I (and many other employees at my store) never saw an issue with the manager, but I guess cooperate did when they fired her with absolutely no warning - they had told the district manager that if he didn’t go fire her, he’d lose his job too (which he did anyway a year later... and they replaced him with the junior district manager who had told me to “hold in my period” when he was the acting manager, then wrote me up for getting upset). I stuck through until we got a new manager, but I saw the Bulk Barn store I knew crumble in front of me, employees left and customers stopped shopping there. After six months, they finally hired a new manager... and it felt like they just picked the first person they saw off the street. She hired people left and right, even though we didn’t have enough money to hire people, didn’t listen to people’s availability, “fired” people by not scheduling them anymore, scheduled people who had put in their two weeks after those two weeks, scheduled people during their approved vacation time, and blatantly had favoritism. At one point, I had been written up for calling out too much, even though I had offered to provide a doctors note and explained it was mental burn out (as I was juggling 30 hours a week there - when I asked for 10 - and a full time bachelors degree) to which she said “No. I don’t care.” There was also several write ups sent to head office, without signatures, so employees were being written up without their knowledge or any warnings. This sort of management extends far beyond my store. As I mentioned, the now district manager has no clue how things work on a retail level, and if anything went wrong he was quick to blame to old district manager (which is why he lost his job, I’m sure). There were rumors around my store about the CEO being a drug addict as well. There was also talk that the CEO messes up so bad, his dad had to unofficially come back as the CEO to fix things. Overall, I do not recommend anyone to work at Bulk Barn. The best it could be is a summer job for a student."

"Not trained properly, information not passed on, schedule consistently interfered with availability, belittled by management, written up without being made aware of it, illegal breaks (45 mins for 8+ hours when it should be 15, 30, 15... this was changed only recently), no communication yet high expectations, no internal hiring (even if you've been there for years)."

"No medical/dental benefits. For any staff. Very little room for growth. Hours are limited so unless you are a salaried manager, meaning no full time employees. Very demanding list of things to do with very limited amount of budget to do them in. No incentives to have employees do more than the bare minimum, since hours will get cut outside of busy season regardless. Everything is micromanaged and you need approval for anything, making the store manager position a joke. There is also no budget specifically for training, so you can't cross train anyone to do anything new without taking away from a regular day. Which translates into no new learning or challenges."
