United Online, Inc. was an independent public company formed by the 2001 merger of NetZero and Juno Online Services. It is currently a subsidiary of investment bank B. Riley Financial. The company's range of products and services has evolved significantly since its inception as a provider of dial-up Internet access. This has been aided by a series of acquisitions that have included Classmates Online (2004), MyPoints (2006), and FTD Group, Inc. (2008), the latter of which was spun off as its own company in 2013. United Online is headquartered in Woodland Hills, California, United States.

An angry former employee said “ United Online is now closed, but had terrible performance and management. Management would cut salaries and increase their bonuses."

"It's been a few years but this was one of the most horrible environments I've worked in. Most management was in their positions due to relationships and not skills. It was immensely political with any advancement based on who you know. I believe the rot comes from the top. There is no direction and there hasn't been for years.The dial business is dying, resale of broadband is a small business, wireless is tiny and the other businesses such as FTD and Classmates are based elsewhere."

"The company offers extremely strong salaries which is great, but it does come at a cost. The office is the stereotypical "corporate" environment. With gray cubicles and the type of silence you could hear a pin drop, the majority of people come here, keep their heads down and collect a check. The corporate culture will rob you of every ounce of personality, zest, or happiness. This is just not the place for creative, vibrant, passionate people to work. There is little room for growth as most people receive title changes and menial raises to compensate for the fact that there is no real upward mobility. More than that, the majority of the team are not passionate about what they're doing and instead gravitate towards this company to 1) Have a healthy work/life balance and 2) Get a nice, steady paycheck. Also, as a result of title changes, I found the managerial team to be extremely lacking and not having real management skills. There was also no real process/procedure in place which created a very unorganized environment. If you are looking for a company that offers a great work/life balance and good money, in exchange for a culture eerily similar to the movie "office space" and employees that lack passion this is the place for you. No judgment because everyone looks for different things in a company, but I would tell anyone creative, passionate, or looking for a company that is investing in their products and sites to run the other direction.Free Beverages, Paid Parking/Bus Pass, Healthy Work/Life BalancePoor work environment, Very uptight corporate culture, Lack of creativity"

"DO NOT BUY from this company! For two reasons: a) as many people said before, they scam you in the exchange rate if you’re outside the EU zone. When I checked out, the price was £201 including delivery fees. I checked my bank statement and they charged me £238 with no reasons! b) I selected to collect the package from a local shop as I was probably going to be out. DHL delivered it late and I wasn’t able to collect it. They sent it back to Germany to Backpacking United after a few days without any warnings, and so far I have not received my item or my money back. I contacted the customer service at Backpacking United and they basically said “It’s not our fault if you didn’t collect it”. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!"

"tl;dr: charged my credit card too much. Refunded me immediately when i queried it but never explained why they charged me the higher amount. Suspect they were attempting to scam me. Placed an order. Prices on the website were shown in GBP, including at the point I entered my card details. The invoice I received by email also showed the price in GBP. However the payment taken was in euro - not only this but also for a price about 9% higher than advertised. This seems to line up with what some other recent reviewers are saying: that they were charged a higher amount in EUR. In this case, the order total, including shipping and tax, was £77.78. They actually charged me 98.9EUR, which is about £84.29 When I queried this, they immediately refunded me the extra 8.19EUR but didn't explain why they'd charged me in the first place. I was still confused why they'd charged me extra so I emailed them back asking why I was charged more initially. In their first response they said that it was because "There will be additional fees for countries outside of the paypal or CC account". I replied, asking them how they calculate these fees and why I wasn't told about them at the time of payment, nor were they included on my invoice. They replied saying the fees weren't charged by them but by my credit card company. This is untrue as my credit card does not charge any overseas usage fees, plus my credit card statement specifically says that they charged me 98.90EUR. Besides, why would they have issued me a refund if it was my credit card company's fees? I replied saying that no, they charged the extra amount themselves, and asking them again to explain why they charged me extra in the first place. At this point they stopped replying to me. I suspect they're expecting people to either not notice if their card is charged a little bit more than the order value, or get sufficiently confused about bank fees or exchange rates that they don't push the issue. So be warned if you've ordered from them to check your credit card statement carefully. Aside from this, the product arrived fine but order fulfillment was pretty slow: 10 days from the order being placed to being shipped. EDIT: Following my review, a representative of the company contacted me immediately. They offered me a full refund but still made excuses about why they are advertising a different price to what they charge. They claimed that it is "not easy" to display accurate prices on the english website, although they do so on the german website. They claim that they are a startup and they are working hard to fix this. Yet their website dates back at least 4 years and was displaying prices in GBP even back then. How can it take them that long to change their website to show accurate prices? My advice is to avoid them, although if you are going to buy from them, it looks like you can check the price of your purchase in EUR on their german language website to avoid any surprises. Edit 2: They tried to get my review taken down, flagging it to trustpilot as not being genuine. Fortunately, after providing evidence to trustpilot, it was reinstated."

"I have ordered items from Backpacking United twice now, and both times have been deeply unsatisfying. On the first count I was confronted by payment issues, and it ended taking over 2 months before i received the jacket I had ordered. On the second they turned out not having the items in store, that they otherwise said they had on their website. They may have low prices and good intentions, but the end result and overall experience are both unprofessional and dissatisfactory. I will not shop there again."

"I am having a terrible time with this company. My partner order some outdoor trousers 3 weeks ago and they still have no arrived. Instead we have an e-mail with a list of excuses as to why the item has not arrived. I replied and ask them to be more specific as to what the problem is. They Ignored that question, and then stated that the item would be send within business working time. Again not very specific. Guess what, now I’m the fourth week and we still have not received it and no communication as to what’s gone wrong, and if we will ever receive the item we paid for. Terrible customer service and will never trust them with my custom again."
