Manageress (Former Employee) says

"If your pub doesn’t do well through stupid rules you have a week to get out they treat you appallingly long hours for less than minimum pay takes 1000 bond which you never see don’t give up your life they don’t care you’re nothing to them"

Bar Staff (Former Employee) says

"Samuel Smith Brewery is an awful company to work for, no job security, no support, poor pay. No help from management, poor quality products, no chance of improvement"

General Manager (Former Employee) says

"If you like to work very and I mean very long hours then go ahead they dont give you enough staff hours so you have to put alot of them in yourself, still stone age with all the paperwork no computer system but the tills everything else is on paper, 32k a year for a management couple (17k) each and you'll be doing anything from 60 hrs up a week with 1 day off no assistant managers because they wont pay the wages list goes on... Cons: Long hrs, little pay no respect from the owners"

Bartender (Former Employee) says

"i worked for samuel smiths brewery starting as bar staff and working my way up to be a manager. very poor training is given. expected to just get on with it, paid very little for the work and hours you have to put in. if i was you i would save yourself the time and stress and apply elsewhere."

Account Manager/Sales (Former Employee) says

"Absolutely appalling company to work for, completely rude and degrading to staff as the family who owns it has money. Abusive and discriminatory. Would avoid at all costs"

Relief Manager (Former Employee) says

"Terrible to work for under current regime however could change massively under Samuel the son of current owner who is more customer orientated and has great people skills"

Public House manager (Former Employee) says

"Terrible place to work stay well away from this one terrible hours surprise inspection s and stock takes can and will throw you out at the drop of a hat no support whatsoever steer well clear"

Generalamager (Former Employee) says

"Worked as management couple, under the ruse that we could mould the place to be a great food led pub. Cons: Pay, hours 7 day week, cannot take holiday as need to provide own relief management, the list is endless!"

General Manager (Former Employee) says

"Put a lot of personal time, money and effort into working for this Brewery and lost every penny. I believe this company is a scam! They have hired over seven sets of joint managers for the bar in Edinburgh all paying in bonds of £1500 over the last 2yrs and are advertising again for managers. If you do not stay with the company for a year they will deduct the cost of training from your final salary, don't actually expect to get one as no managers yet have left with wages or a return on their bond."

Manager (Former Employee) says

"Humphrey Smith is the most difficult person you could ever work for. I strongly recommend everybody stay well clear of him and his company. He has NO man management skills and rules his company with a rod of iron. He has no feelings for his clients who frequent his public houses, no mobiles or iPads in any of his pubs, no calls to be received or made! Who does he think he is. A real slave driver to. He doesn’t want 40 hours a week, he wants 80 minimum. His turnover of managers is frightening."

hgv c_c+e driver (Current Employee) says

"early start with heavy loading by hand first thing Cons: very heavy work long hours and little reward"

General Manager (Former Employee) says

"Working extremely long hours from 7am to midnight, an quite frequently to early hours of the morning, 7 days a week.. No work/life balance what so ever. No support network to aid, with constant threat of losing your job if you do not do what you are told to do whether it includes breaking the law, putting your livelihood and career on the line. Salary was pathfectic in relation to work. Offered a basic salary of 23k for a joint salary. Salary to run this type of establishment is 35k at least for a single appointment with other companies."

Two weeks relief manager (Former Employee) says

"hard Cons: cannot be trusted"

Contruction (Former Employee) says

"Paranoid owners, disgusting disciplinary"

Managers (Former Employee) says

"Just another management team no bond repaid after 8 years service basically working for a con man working 48 hour week what a joke more like 72 each well out of it but would of liked the bond back and the interest it accured no please or thankyous Cons: Bad practices"

House Manager (Former Employee) says

"initialy a great family friendly company to work for, but since the head the owning family got rid of all tiers of company management and took over the reigns in 2009, it descended into chaos. i resigned in 2014and took early retiremnt. Cons: very long hours, tied accomodation, salary, senior management."

Barmaid (Former Employee) says

"I loved working here until I was made suddenly redundant."

Manager (Former Employee) says

"We were employed as a management couple. The wages were very low and we knew the hours would be long. Sadly the reality was a ridiculous amount of working hours. We didn't really get days off unless we worked extra hours another day and getting a day off together was once in a blue moon (not even Christmas day). Cons: long long hours, very low wages"

Relief Manager (Former Employee) says

"Typical day at work would include cashing up and floating tills, cleaning and preparing all rooms and toilets ready for customers, cellar management. Receiving deliveries. Opening and closing of premises and service during opening hours. Cons: Working all hours."

Bar Staff (Former Employee) says

"Enjoyed working 2 evenings a week .until the head of the brewery decided to change things around .no mobiles and no background music .place of work was empty by 8.00pm ."
