Kona Grill, Inc. is an upscale casual restaurant company based in Scottsdale, Arizona serving American cuisine, sushi, and cocktails. The company owns and operates around 40 restaurants in 23 U.S. states, as well as three international locations operating under franchise agreements.
A former employee shared her story, "I had to leave due to such poor management. The servers would work without breaks for longer periods than 8 hours, some would work a full 12 hour shift with no break. There was definitely favoritism that the management would show towards their favorite employees and the ones they didn’t like they would retaliate against. Tried to call off due to mental health issues and was in the middle of talking with an inpatient facility when my manager told me if I did not show up I would be fired, just to be called the next day to come in and then was told I wasn’t allowed to call off again and was being written up. Called HR and then management retaliated against me and had me rolling silverware and washing dishes and busing tables instead of doing my job as a hostess."
Former Employee - Bartender says"Many Cons, biggest one being that my first paycheck was given to the wrong employee, who deposited my check into their account. I was told to take the check anyway and ended up being charged a return check fee when the check was taken out of my account. Management's answer was to have me paid by Zelle by another employee. Totally unprofessional!!!!!!! I didn't even get my entire check!!!"

Former Employee - Server/Bartender says"They skim an ungodly amount in tipshare off the top of server's tips. Sushi chefs receive 6% of server's sushi sales, bartenders get 4% of alcohol sales, and bussers get 1.5% of total sales. This can easily add up to $60+ a night. I opened my restaurant and the training team they sent to each new restaurant was ridiculous. The bartenders were chosen solely on looks (4 former bartenders were passed up for "hotter" girls who had no background in alcohol sales). These were conveniently the same people that the trainers decided to go out drinking with in the evenings after our training classes. The only way to make money was as a cocktail server or bartender. The separate dining room area (which was not granted happy hour prices) was always dead because no one wanted to pay literally twice as much for appetizers just to sit in a slightly quieter area. There was also an insane amount of sidework that had to be done each night, as well as a ridiculous amount of silverware that had to be rolled. You could make up to $200 a night, but you would also be paying a tipshare to the sushi chefs who make $15+/hr."

Former Employee - Server says"Most unprofessional management team I've ever worked for and I cannot say this enough. They do not train, nor give you any type of guidance, but get angry when you do something wrong. One of the managers vapes the entire time and the other just sits on his phone and bosses everyone around. I lasted here for 2 weeks and ultimately quit because the management was intolerable. It would've been a good job if the managers gave a crap about their employees. Any of the managers reading this, you know who I am. Get your stuff together and learn how to manage."

Former Employee - Server Assistant says"Unethical behaviors in the workplace by lying to you. Four managers that don't communicate. Each manager will tell you different things. One of the managers lacks respect for her server assistants. The manager will ignore you the whole day if they are mad. The manager will dump all the server/Bartender job and other work on the server assistant. No training about the company culture or anything. The workplace is toxic. Lack of training. Long hours."

Bartender (Former Employee) says"Considering the company name is from the Big Island of Hawaii, you'd think that Aloha would be apart of the company culture. Nope. KG is just another corporate machine that only cares about making some suit somewhere on the the mainland a bunch of money. They do not care about their employees whatsoever nor want them to make $. The corporate trainers SUCK. Not the least bit surprised the Waikiki location went out of business. Aloha suckers!"

Hostess (Former Employee) says"Became hostess there and management is terrible. Glad I left before it shut down. 3 days into the job and they told me to train new servers. Really? Also managers refuse to give out their phone numbers just in case of an emergency which is stupid of them. All they say it's "message me on hot schedules". One bald manager is a hot head and I don't know why and how he became manager when he doesn't care at all and blames the hostesses for everything that each inconvenience that the customer causes. Only there was 1 good manager out of SIX. Parking was AWFUL at the domain because you have to fight with customers for decent parking, otherwise you have to walk half a mile away to work. Customers throw up in the bathroom all the time and guess what, you have to clean it up. There were servers who were sketchy and stole other's table when it's not meant for them and they decide to blame you. One server took a to go order wrong and the customer recorded it. It was her voice on the phone and said it wasn't her when it was. Managers didn't care. Guess it worked out for me when I left. Don't work here unless you want to do everyone's job for low pay50% off food, sometimes you get free sushi from the sushi chefsManagement, you have to do everyone's job"

Hostess/To-Go Specialist (Former Employee) says"In my previous job I was one of the best. I did my job well and loved helping customers, so you could imagine my surprise when I gave my 2 weeks at Kona Grill and the manager said, "Thank God, we we're getting so many complaints about you" not once was I told by any customer that my service was bad, in fact, I would frequently receive praise that I was working so hard, even if I did receive a complaint , why didn't the managers tell me so that I could fix my mistake!?. In the months before I left, my hours went from 25 a week (was promised full time) to 5-10. I was constantly put in the scorching hot patio(Arizona), while all the other hostesses enjoyed air conditioning and was told by my manager that I was a "bagger and tagger". I had never been so offended. I was the only hostess to clean the bathroom, (also the females sanitary products bins, with my freaking bare hands, ew) and often left work crying because of the nasty attitude that most of the hostesses had towards me. Karen Tirabassi-Hahn says"I purchased over three thousand dollars worth of Home Depot gift cards. I used all but $250 worth right away no problem. A few months later I went to use the balance of them and all of them had been depleted to ZERO. I contacted the FL Attorney General. They sent me a letter that they were going to contact Bargain Gift Card asking them for a resolution. If they don't get in contact t with me or the Attorney general's office they will just close the case. That seems ridiculous....why would BGC even bother to respond. There's repercussion if they don't....just smh."

Diane Miller says"The first time I purchased a gift card from wiki, there was no problem. The next time I purchased a gift card for P.F. Chang's and paid $100. Within two hours, we went to P.F. Chang's and when it came time to pay the bill, the manager informed us there was a $0 balance on the card I just purchased that day. I have contacted Wiki several times and they never even acknowledged my emails."
