Today, it employs approximately 45,000 people in hundreds of businesses across 53 countries,and is based in Glenview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

ITW has more than 18,000 granted and pending patent applications worldwide. The company typically ranks in the top 100 of patent issuers in the U.S.

A upset former employee said this in a review about the work environment "I have never been lied to by management as much as I have working for Illinois Tool Works. This is a company that is all about greed. Hourly employees have to ask permission over the radio to use the restroom, its ridiculous!"

"If they want to get rid of you, they will either A. Hire someone to work under you, give them a new title and eliminate your position or B Destroy your self esteem with horrible reviews that no matter what you say, or how hard you work, will never get better, then put you on a "performance plan" that is basically 99% chance of them having "justifiable cause for termination". Theft runs rampant and they refused to install cameras because if they did, it would show they didn't"trust" their employees. Its a dog eat dog environment. Don't trust anyone, especially in HR."

"For most of my time here, I didn't feel like I was a valued part of the company, just a tool to be used, mistreated, and underappreciated. There was never any communication from management, and I was given no way to communicate with anyone. The tasks I was assigned were so physically straining that it was painful for my back and legs. The working conditions were very poor, including being loud, unorganized, and no air conditioning with little air circulation. "Upper management makes inconsistent decisions with a complete disregard for how it affects current personnel. Don't bother looking for a solid answer because it will change with the wind if you ever get one. Expect to be overburdened due to management's lack of foresight and perpetual understaffing."

"A typical day at ITW would be that you can expect for things to be unorganized when you get to work. I've learned that they will change things at the spare of the moment and they do have poor management. Safety isn't a top priority when working and if injured they never show concern. The hardest part of my Job was having 4 to 5 different duties at one time and best part of the day was when i was getting off work."
