Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) is an American video game company headquartered in Redwood City, California. It is the second-largest gaming company in the Americas and Europe by revenue and market capitalization after Activision Blizzard and ahead of Take-Two Interactive and Ubisoft as of March 2018. Founded and incorporated on May 27, 1982, by Apple employee Trip Hawkins, the company was a pioneer of the early home computer games industry and was notable for promoting the designers and programmers responsible for its games. EA published numerous games and productivity software for personal computers and later experimented on techniques to internally develop games, leading to the 1987 release of Skate or Die!. Currently, EA develops and publishes games of established franchises, including Battlefield, Need for Speed, The Sims, Medal of Honor, Command & Conquer, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Army of Two, Titanfall, and Star Wars, as well as the EA Sports titles FIFA, Madden NFL, NBA Live, NHL, and EA Sports UFC. Their desktop titles appear on self-developed Origin, an online gaming digital distribution platform for PCs and a direct competitor to Valve's Steam and Epic Games' Store. EA also owns and operates major gaming studios such as EA Tiburon in Orlando, EA Vancouver in Burnaby, DICE in Sweden and Los Angeles, BioWare in Edmonton and Austin, and Respawn Entertainment in Los Angeles.

Back in 2004 The Guardian Newspaper reported how EA Spouse controversy exposed a culture of unpaid overtime throughout the games industry. Here are some highlights of that special report:

It was with these words 10 years ago that Erin Hoffman began an online journal detailing her husband’s grueling experience working at an EA game development studio. For months on end, he worked 12-hour days, six days a week, and when the game’s final deadline loomed, it got worse. The article went viral, spreading across forums and news sites, and provoking a wave of controversy and condemnation. Very quickly it became clear that the most shocking thing about the EA Spouse story was that, within the industry, it wasn’t shocking at all. It was just how things worked. Game development surveys conducted by the International Game Developers Association in 2004 showed that only 2.4% of respondents worked in no-crunch environments and 46.8% received no compensation for their overtime. But, a decade after EA Spouse, it’s questionable how much has actually changed. Statistically, things appear better. In 2004, the IGDA – the only large organization advocating for labor rights in the US games industry – started a regular “quality of life” survey in response to the EA controversy, polling staff on working standards and practices. Its latest numbers from the 2014 report show a decline in intensity. Studio managers have realized that EA-Spouse-type situations mean bad PR, so soft pressure is widely taking the place of mandatory overtime. This may be as simple as encouraging a culture of peer pressure: quietly exploiting the natural desire to do well is a method that many of the staff we spoke to had encountered. However, we were also told of managers who noted which staff had put in the most hours when making a potential layoff list.

"Taking calls all day from people who don't understand basic computer functions or that just want to yell about something they are unhappy about. Management was horrible and almost non existent. The workplace culture was the only redeeming quality as it was alot of fun game loving people who worked there not knowing what the job was actually like when applying. The hardest part of the job was paying my bills at minimum wage. Fortunately overtime was almost always approved so i could sleep on the couch in the break room and go back to work anytime i wanted to rack up hours. The most enjoyable part of the job was the people i worked with. All of them were laid back gamers."

This is an issue because there are only so many bugs in each test area.To top off this stress is the lack of pay and job security. The down side was that it would become boring at times, because 90% of the work load was repetitive but on the up side it made more stress resistant. "If you’re a QA tester you already know that you’re not going to be here long, for me I signed a year long contract but one of the things they DON’T tell you is that early furlough is a thing and they claim it doesn’t happen often but it does and you’ll be out of a job with only a weeks notice. I enjoyed working here and I loved the culture and friends I made but it was impossible to move up, test leads had their favorites and their favorites would definitely move up, and there’s sometimes zero communication and no form of communication drives me insane."

"Company is absolutely horrible. My account was hacked on Apex Legends and the Origin launcher even CLEARLY gave me a message one more than I was unable to log in due to the account already in use. Literally the warning popped up on my launcher that someone else was using my account. I immediately changed my password and logged in. All of my character skins were different, my rank was different, and I had different friends on my friends list. Once I changed my password I thought it was over. Then the company banned me. I have been playing this game since the beginning of the release. A week one player!! I thought no worries, I could just get my account back after explaining what happened. Mind you this company should be able to see the log ins and activity on my account and even where the people logged in from. NOPE. They refuse to do anything. Claim I'm the one that cheated. All they do is close my case submissions. They even refuse to respond to my BBB complaints. I have spend HUNDREDS of dollars over the last few years on this game and they completely tossed me aside like the trash. RIDICULOUS. This completely is garbage, their support is garbage, and they treat their customers like garbage. HORRIBLE. COMPANY."

"I have no idea what to do so I guess I'm posting here. Last year (2020) around March I purchased a game bundle of Sims 4 (1 EP, 1 GP, 1 SP) to add to my base game. After buying the game my husband was unsure of the charge and flagged it on our card. I noticed when my account got banned and my games disappeared. I checked my bank and when I realized what happened I immediately called my bank to allow the charge and then went on EA help to fix the issue. I included copies of my bank statement showing the initial charge and cancellation, then the most recent, updated charge that went through to prove that EA had indeed received the money for the games. After emailing back and forth with a rep, they unlocked my suspended account and "closed the case", but did not put my games back onto my account so I could not play them. I reached back out and was told they could not give me my games back and told me to make sure I didn't purchase them through a third party. When I explained that I bought the games directly through them they ceased all communication with me and "closed" the second case. Since then I have tried to open multiple cases, including screen shots that prove they received the money and that it went directly to them, not a third-party. I have been repeatedly ignored, even when asking for a customer service phone number to talk directly to someone to fix the issue. Trying to log-in today I find that my account is again suspended/banned and the website won't even let me "open a case" to talk to someone. Anyone know how I can solve this or speak to someone to figure this out? I am so fed up with EA and them stealing my games/money. I will never spend money with EA again!"

I purchased simcity through as it says it is now 64bit compatible when purchased through the Apple Mac app store however wanted to keep all my games in one place as I have the Sims 4 through origin. On the origin app i purchased it, then went to download and it said it isn't supported by my mac. I tried getting an answer from EA online chat for a resolution to download the game considering it is compatible when purchased elsewhere, but the online tech was slow and unhelpful. I am unable to get a refund as i purchased it 3 months ago even though I had not been able to download it. Will not purchase through EA when the support is so horrid."
