Progesterone (P4) is a medication and naturally occurring steroid hormone. It is a progestogen and is used in combination with estrogens mainly in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms and low sex hormone levels in women. It is also used in women to support pregnancy and fertility and to treat gynecological disorders. Progesterone can be taken by mouth, in through the vagina, and by injection. Vaginal micronized progesterone gels and capsules were introduced for medical use under brand names such as Utrogestan and Crinone in the early 1990s.
Before taking Crinone be aware of the following side effects listed on webmd.com, "Bloating, cramps, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, breast swelling/pain, pain around the vaginal area, drowsiness, tiredness, decreased interest in sex, joint pain, or headache may occur while taking Crinone. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. You may develop a vaginal discharge containing little white balls of gel from using this medication. This is normal and harmless. However, if you develop any unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly."
