Former Employee - Activism says"I worked at American Civil Liberties Union full-time Cons: Found out my pay was lower than others at my level No professional development Benefits were terrible and included a confusing reimbursement process. Major differences between the Cleveland and Columbus offices in terms of resources and overall vibe. Black employees are there to be seen and not heard. Refuses to cede any sort of power to non senior staff."
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee says"I have been working at American Civil Liberties Union full-time for more than 5 years Cons: too many people who stay too long and don't get professional development and are inadequate managers and supervisors. Espoused values do not match with lived values."
Current Employee - Employee says"I have been working at American Civil Liberties Union full-time Cons: Morale is low, lots of departures"
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says"I worked at American Civil Liberties Union full-time Cons: I have never worked in such a toxic environment and with so many coworkers who were unhappy. I wouldn't recommend working here to anyone. The ACLU is also one of the most self aggrandizing institutions I have ever had the displeasure of being in. The attorneys don't respect support staff, management is a mess, and HR is useless. It is appalling how people who work here profit and make a career out of pursuing social justice while at the same time treating their staff in ways antithetical to their public image. Employees are racist, elitist, and transphobic. Their inability to acknowledge and address the ways in which they are invested in, and profit from, power structures is utterly embarrassing. If you work here, you will be disrespected, dehumanized, overworked, underpaid, gaslit, tokenized, and subject to uncomfortable, awkward social interactions."

Former Employee - Human Resources says"I worked at American Civil Liberties Union full-time for more than 3 years Cons: - Bureaucracy - Pay is not competitive - Dysfunctional HR department - No room for growth or flexibility - Disparagement of non-attorneys"
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says"I worked at American Civil Liberties Union full-time for less than a year Cons: Admin wise: They only believe in civil rights for certain types of people. They have antiquated systems and fear change. They don't mind violating employees civil rights. Very toxic and unprofessional environment."
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says"I worked at American Civil Liberties Union full-time for less than a year Cons: Stop the drama in the office. It is unnecessary. If you can't trust people to do their jobs, then don't hire them! Nobody likes to constantly explain themselves over ridiculous things - you should have better things to do than harp on small, insignificant things. If nobody is injured and you're not wasting money - move on for Christ sake... There are zero growth opportunities."
