AFS Intercultural Programs (or AFS, originally the American Field Service) is an international youth exchange organization. It consists of over 50 independent, not-for-profit organizations, each with its own network of volunteers, professionally staffed offices, volunteer board of directors, and website. In 2015, 12,578 students traveled abroad on an AFS cultural exchange program, between 99 countries.

Michelle who spent a Gap Year High School Program in Belgium shares her unlucky experience with AFS in ¨Go Overseas¨,

"My year abroad in Belgium through AFS was full of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Full disclosure, I went abroad at 16, a mere junior in high school, 10 years ago. With these 10 years of hindsight, I can give the full report, and how it has affected me all these years later. The AFS program, while set up to help each student succeed, failed on a few accounts. I was explicitly told that the host families were not paid to host the participants. The host family in which I was placed was unable to provide adequate food and the family was extremely hostile towards me and Americans in general. I understand this is not within the control of the program necessarily, but when I complained and asked to be switched, I was unable. The country is divided into districts where you are not able to move freely. There was not another host family in my district, and so I was out of luck. My host family was informed (without my consent) that I was unhappy and that made the situation even worse. I feel that AFS put me into a potentially dangerous situation with regard to my host family. On the other hand, I loved the other people that participated in the program. I was able to learn a great deal about myself. It was a year that was truly full of growth and learning. The experience itself, while difficult at times (especially with my host family) was ultimately transformative. It enabled me to become a stronger person and trust myself. I would highly recommend study abroad as a teen, but I would be wary of the difficulty that could arise with the structure AFS uses to place their students."

"Awful place with terrible management, You barely get any time off you’re working pretty much every weekend and as I said management acts like a bunch of children they show lots of favoritism such as whoever they’re friends with can do whatever they want while everyone else can’t, just a terribly ran place. "Months of training. False promises and statements made by management almost daily. Constant miscommunication. The pay was great, but the guy in charge personally did not like me, so my numbers were sabotaged to make it look like I was not reaching my quota, even though I was kicking butt, so he could get rid of me due to not reaching my quota. Sintering Operator (Current Employee) says

"12 hour shifts 6 days a week because they can't keep employees and don't bring enough in that stay. Upper management treats employees poorly and are not very understanding for emergency situations. Have to pick up slack of bad employees that stay while good employees get fired over little issues. Pay is low for most jobs with no raises or chances to work your way up in the company. Cons: Non caring management, low pay, no room for growth, mandated overtime immediately"

"Dazed and confused is how you will feel on any given day. Management makes wholesale changes (vs small tweaks) all the time. Constantly buying smaller companies. With every acquisition comes a new philosophy, plan, process change. Dizzying. Cons: see above. Horrendous management"

Pathetic leadership, wage thieves. Of the 6-7 hired in my group, 0 remain. Leads are weak especially for the new guys. You’ll see a bunch of kids and old guys working there. No one else lasts. The car business has lower turnover no matter what they say. CFO just left as well. That’s a big deal!"

Rather, get the training pay and then say adios. The training pay is pretty good. Never sign the non compete. It’s paper thin. Alabama is a right to work state. They know it. It’s a niche market so just start your own company doing the same thing. You’re welcome in advance. HR will write a response because they have to. For the size of the company they shouldn’t have a sky high turn over rate. And believe my they DO requardless of what HR says in they're response."

I worked until 9 or 10 at night and my paycheck rarely reflected that and i was not compensated for overtime. Sales employees were constantly being shorted on commission. They have a ton of employees that are family and they only promote them. Im pretty sure theres some sort of incestual behavoir going on."

"I worked at AFS Foundation & Waterproofing Specialists Cons: If you want to work for a company that takes advantage of it's employee's, then work here. After you make a sale, it takes 2 to 3 months before you get paid a commission, if the customer doesn't cancel first. They will not give you a draw. Your check is never right and constantly trying to get the correct pay. They talk a good game and when you accept employment, the game changes constantly in their favor. High prices, high pressure, low commissions! Please do not give this company the opportunity to do this to you."
