A senior software developer mentioned, "The code base at Vontobel is terrible, they are attempting to improve it now but there is lots of awful code to be replaced before anything decent can emerge and that means most development work involves maintaining the mess.

There is a genuine lack of belief in standard software processes. Mangement believe software developers should do all jobs related to software including test, requirements gathering and support (1st, 2nd and 3rd level). The lack of requirements means business will give a one-line description and the developer will have to waste time asking questions and waiting for responses that generally lack detail and it will only be reviewed when it is released to UAT or sometimes production, this has, inevitably, lead to a terrible code base with hacks built on hacks. The lack of testing means bugs are often only found in production, and it is risky to try and improve the software since the lack of regression testing means it is easy to cause bugs in production. The lack of support means all issues, no matter how trivial, have to be dealt with by senior developers so it is hard to concentrate."
