Former Employee - Customer Service Representative (CSR) says

"not much opportunity for growth. management picks favorites and they are racist. Brand new employees that are regular agents are paid more than some supervisors."

"-Very low pay compared to peers in your field and cost of living in the city. Good luck getting raises which equate to barely a cost of living increase. If you do get raises/bonuses it is all ultimately based on if your boss likes you. They usually say "well with the bonuses you MAY receive that actually puts you on par with where the market is for your position". Spoiler.... even IF the bonuses come they won't and don't put you on par. When you do get a bonus you don't get it all at once. They give you a part of it over a couple years, so if you leave before that, no bonus for you, even though you earned it a year or two prior to that. Most people there might be happy with the low pay because they 'drink the kool-aid,' and if you don't you probably won't last long. -No real room for growth. This place is the government job of retail. Once someone is in, they never leave/get fired. It sounds good but that means there is no room for advancement, since no one leaves. They just have to make up new titles to 'promote' people which just causes more territorial corporate shoving matches. They don't fire anyone either (no matter how badly they screw up or how unqualified they are for their position) which is probably why the people never leave. -Nearly all the leadership have been there since the sub-companies were founded which leads to stale ideas, tyrannical rule, and the lower leadership scared frozen to make changes (old rich white males are definitely the perfect people to have the pulse on what younger consumers want). -The company has this whole mantra of "family" and promoting from within. The lie they tell the part-timers and managers at stores is that "if you work and work and work eventually you will get this golden parachute to come work at the home office". A few do but the others they work to the bone over long holiday hours with little pay until they quit. While promoting from within is great, sometimes in the corporate world you need to have a degree in buying and merchandising instead of "I'm good at selling shoes". This means actual, qualified applicants are thrown in the trash in order to interview someone for a corporate job that hit whatever sale goal they had and so the department can say "Look 80% of our team came from the stores! None of us know how to use a spreadsheet or basic market strategy but isn't that great!""

"Not allowed to take time off from August through beginning of January. Managment does not care about agents will fire you even when you go above and beyond what they ask. Everything is a popularity contest. They say "promote from within" but thats only if you are friends with managment. Was overlooked multiple times for position, they promoted other people that did not know the job and didnt even meet job posting requirements. They were friends of higher ups."

"HR representation is not what someone should act or treat bias on the management opinion when it's another manager involved. There shouldn't be just 1 store manager it should be co shared. To avoid incidents"

"Employees are treated like crap. Hands down. No one gets paid remotely enough. Not even managers. Part timers work minimum wage, and are given next to no hours. Managers and co- managers are required to work 45 hours a week minimum, but we usually end up working 50 to 60 hour weeks. Base pay for managers is 200 a week max. The rest is commission and it’s only 4%. This makes the employee turnover rate off the charts, which leaves us almost always severely understaffed. That being said, if you are sick, you’re still required to work. Even if you are straight out of the ER sick, if you can’t find coverage, you still have to work. It’s disgusting how little this company cares about their employees. People who should not be getting out of bed because of the severity of their illness are still expected to be at work, unless there is coverage. Which, with how understaffed these stores are, it’s basically impossible to find coverage. It makes me absolutely sick how higher management treats their employees. Can’t say enough negative things about this company."

"I don’t even know where to start!! I left my job making good money due to being lied to by this company!! I was working there a month and quit! I seen my check for one week working 40 plus hours and after that they told me I will be making 175 a day (175 a week) discount is a joke they gave me 100 dollars to start off and I didn’t know it was limited I worked 76 hours for a 530 this job isn’t for anyone not even a high schooler you waste time working in that place and waste money on gas going"

"I have had many many jobs in management. And to the day, Genesco is hands down the worst compay I have worked for. Store managers making less than co managers, which pay actually equals to minimum wage. Lies to get you to accept heavier work loads because turnover is so high. No one listens. Associates don't respect authority. District is even worse, non attentive almost non existent. Im paid minimum wage for back breaking work 58 hours a week."

"The HR Group experienced quite a bit of turnover in the almost 3 years I was employed at Genesco. These changes brought about some good forward progress, but the most recent managerial shifts have not been positive for anybody in the group nor the company. The new management is very difficult to work with and for. There is no movement for discussions. It is their way or get out."

"Low pay; only $9 starting and there are people who worked 25 plus years there only making $13! They didn't give me any heads up when they laid me off because they were slow... No heads up. Probably did me a favor. They only pay 1.5 overtime if you hit over 40 hours, but they will work you hard on Monday and Tuesday at a fast pace with overtime... Then when Thursday and Friday roll around they will send home after your minimum hours you have to work by law a day are up. You'll end up work 28-34 hours. When they do slam you with work... And you work hard or fast, you get nothing for it; no raise, nothing.Simple and straightforwardTreat you like trash, not responsible, hard to get days off when you want them, yet hard to have them when you need them.
